NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS
A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENTMarch 22, 2024
Happy Friday Seals! Like so many moments in the last few school years, we find ourselves at a time of great change. As Seattle Public Schools looks ahead to new leadership and budgeting it is time to once again come together as a community and have your voices heard. Please take a few moments to read the three calls to action below. If you have any questions or suggestions do not hesitate to reach out to Beth Carman at president@northbeachpta.org. School Board Candidate Forum Candidate Forum Questionnaire The Seattle Public School Board has narrowed down to four candidates for District 2 and District 4 each. There will be a Candidate Forum on Wednesday, March 27th at Lincoln High School, time is pending. The School Board President, Liza Rankin, has invited District 2 PTAs and other community stakeholders to submit questions and topics for the candidate forum. If you have a question or topic you’d like discussed please share it here. The NBPTA will use responses to distill questions and topics submitted. Responses are needed by Thursday, March 21st. NW Seattle Area Growth and Well Resourced Schools Crown Hill Urban Action Plan Feedback Form Northwest Seattle is booming. Constant construction and new businesses seem to develop daily and North Beach Elementary continues to grow year after year. NW Seattle schools deserve long term, strategic thinking that acknowledges the growth in the area. If one school is affected by budget shortfalls it will impact every school in the area. With the Seattle Public Schools budget crisis in the forefront of our minds and a look ahead to Well Resourced schools, the NBPTA believes it is vital to ensure that the District and any incoming School Board Directors are aware of this growth and will make decisions based off of the reality of the area and not projections on a spreadsheet in the John Stanford Center. In an email dated March 6th and titled, “Important Update on Seattle Public Schools Budget: Supporting Students Together '' there is a link to the Budget Development Page; at the very bottom of that page, you will find the feedback form for the budget. The NBPTA is encouraging everyone to use the feedback form to highlight the immense amount of growth outlined in the Crown Hill Urban Village Action Plan and to share any relevant student centered stories you may have regarding this growth. If you’d like a little less dense understanding of the plan, here is a 2021 Urbanist article speaking about the action plan. Please submit your budget feedback and highlight our urban growth and the Crown Hill Urban Action Plan. It is a simple and effective way to ensure our voices are heard. The NBPTA will also reach out to community schools to partner in this message. SPS District 2 and District 4 Candidates SPS Board Candidate Poll The SPS School Board has narrowed down District 2 & 4 Candidates to four for each district.
